Oh boy! October is over
already. Every week it seems like time
is picking up speed and slowly we are passing it by. The weather here has been a bit moody but I
think we are finally phasing out of the rainy season and into winter? Who
knows? With the 85- 90 degree temperatures you wouldn't even think we had gone
through fall! I hear that is it is been
getting cold at home and I have yet to decide if I am jealous of the turning
leaves and long sleeve shirts or if I am satisfied with sweltering
humidity. I am thankful however that I
will be missing the long dreary winter months after Christmas! On to my update from this week.
Monday we had class in the morning with Pastor Flores from Torre Fuerte, the
church that we attend two times a month alternating with El Puente. He taught on the book of James. I really enjoyed his peppy attitude and the
way he involved all of us in his discussion of the chapter. He had us get into a circle and with Mario's
translation led us through the first chapter of James. We talked about how temptation originates
from our sinful desires and that we have to understand the process of temptation
to be able to conquer it. " When tempted
no one should say. "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor
does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, his
is dragged away and enticed. Then, after
desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full grown
gives birth to death." (James 1:13-15) In this chapter we also find a solution to these temptations in verses
19-21 which says, "My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be
quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to be angry, for man's anger does not
bring around the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, get rid of all
moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word that
is planted in you, which can save you." In this we see that it isn't only
enough to simply listen to God's word but to also put a conscious effort into
humbly practicing truth. Then after lunch time I taught ESL at Colegio San
Antonio. We had a quiz over the numbers
and my group failed miserably. I was a
little bit disappointed because they had been bored in last Monday's class and
had seemed to already know the numbers. So we reviewed the numbers for a while and then I went on to teach them
the days, months, and seasons. In order
to incorporate the numbers and months I had them each tell me their birth date
and the season they were born in. They seemed to be getting it down but they
were awfully distracted and I had a hard time not getting frustrated. Becca came back Monday night from the wedding
she went home for. We were glad to have her back and she brought us back two
jars of Jiffy chunky peanut butter and Twizzlers!
discussed the chapter on fasting in The Celebration of Discipline. I personally have never fasted and I do not
know a whole lot on the subject so I really enjoyed getting to find out
more. Most of the people on my team have
had an experience with fasting and were able to share some stories on what it
was like and what their motivations were for fasting. We read in Isaiah 58: 1-9 about what fasting
for God looks like as opposed to fasting for others approval. That night we went a boy named Ezekiel´s house for dinner. It was a going away party for the Swans who are missionaries down here that are now returning to the United States. The dinner was really good with rice, vegetables and some plantain maduras which are the sweet ones. Some of the boys didn´t come to the dinner they went to Hogar Crea for bible study. When they came back they had all shaved their heads and it was pretty crazy.
